SAO PAULO, Brazil: Brazilian airline Gol will start service between Brazil and Mexico next year but has put on hold plans to launch a new Mexican airline based on its no-frills business model, the company said Tuesday.Gol Linhas Aereas Inteligentes SA plans to start flying from Brazil to the Peruvian capital of Lima by the end of this year, and that route will extend to Mexico City by the second quarter of 2007, chief executive Constantino Oliveira Jr. said during a conference call with analysts. But chief financial officer Richard Lark said a planned joint venture for a new low-cost airline in Mexico modeled after Gol was on hold because other carriers are trying to expand or start operations in the country.Continued:http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2006/10/31/business/LA_FIN_Brazil_Mexico_Gol.php

Ryan Airs' new Mexican Budget Airline starts flying at the end of this month.

http://www.vivaaerobus.com/

Flights are rock bottom, just like Ryan Airs', massively undercutting the current Mexican "budget airlines" prices. They fly to Tijuana and Ciudad Juarez on the US border opposite San Diego and El Paso respectively, so when Gol start flights to Mexico it should be possible for the first time to travel between North and South America completely by budget airlines.

Great news! Time for me to start work on the

Latin American Low Cost Airline Guides

in earnest.

Gols current international routes:

Porte Alegre, Brazil - Montevideo Uruguay
Porte Alegre, Brazil - Buenos Aires, Argentina
Sao Paulo, Brazil - Buenos Aires, Argentina
Porte Alegre, Brazil - Rosario, Argentina
Porte Alegre, Brazil - Cordoba, Argentina
Curitiba, Brazil - Asuncion, Paraguay
Campo Grande, Brazil - Santa Cruz - Bolivia
Sao Paulo, Brazil - Santiago, Chile
Buenes Aires, Argentina - Santiago - Chile
Asuncion, Paraguay - Cordoba, Argentina

They also fly from Manaus to Boa Vista in the North, close (in Brazilian terms) to the Guyanan and Venezuelan borders.

There's speculation that future destinations include Bogota, Caracas, Aruba, and Panama City (They offer the latter route already, but it's just a code share operated by Copa, and not what I'd consider budget prices).

Gol now fly between Peru (Lima) and Chile (Santiago). Return flights from Peru are very reasonable, but here's the rub, one way tickets are wildly overpriced, over twice the price of a return, so it obviously pays to get a return even if you don't need it.

Odd that they should be doing that - it harks back to the bad old way that flag carriers like to do things: fly there and back, pay for three seats instead of two; fly there, pay for seven seats instead of one.

One of the revolutionary ideas that low cost airlines came up with was: pay only for the seat you sit on. Is GOL getting complacent because it doesn't have any real competition?

Unfortunately it now seems to be the case for all of GOL's international flights. Domestic flights are unaffected.

I'm sure the lack of competition has a lot to do with it, but it's a ridiculous policy, especially for a so called budget carrier. GOL backed out of launching in Mexico due to not wanting to compete.

On the positive side, Viva Aerobus's entry into the Mexican market seems to have had an affect on Interjet, their fares are very reasonable, even lower that Viva Aerobus's, although they don't fly the same routes.

I have a suggestion for when you get round to doing that: some of the airlines mentioned at the moment are mainly US carriers with flights to Cancun. It'd be a lot easier to work out how to get from A to B if you identified these separately.

An update on Gol's expansion plans.

Low-cost airline Gol Linhas Aereas Inteligentes expects permits this year to operate flights to Mexico from Lima as it pursues aggressive expansion in the region, the Brazilian carrier said on Tuesday.

"We are working on authorization to fly to Mexico from Lima, for the Sao Paulo-Lima-Mexico route ... we are hoping to get the permit this year," said Gol's vice-president of marketing, Tarcisio Gargioni.

Gol operates about 600 flights per day, including routes to Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay. Flights started this week to Peru.

Gargioni said the airline, which wants to fly to every country in South America by 2010, is setting its targets now on flights to Venezuela and Colombia.

In 2006, LAN concentrated on strengthening its hub in the Peruvian capital Lima, bolstering its presence in Argentina and adding capacity on its routes to Brazil, where it flies to Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo.

It faces stiff competition from low-cost carrier Gol, which recently started flying from Santiago to Lima and is reportedly planning to enter the Argentine domestic market.

"We heard some rumors about Gol starting in Argentina, but we don't see this as a threat ... to us it's not really a big issue," de la Fuente said. (Additional reporting by Todd Benson in Sao Paulo)

Viva Aerobus Aims To Start U.S. Flights By August

New Mexican low-cost carrier Viva Aerobus has started the process to gain FAA's approval to launch flights to the U.S., in hopes of starting the service in July or August.

The carrier, formed and owned by Mexican bus company IAMSA and the Ryan family, launched flights in November 2006 with two Boeing 737-300s, formerly part of US Airways' fleet.

Carrier CEO and former EasyJet Chief Operating Officer Mike Szucs told The DAILY at the recent Raymond James Growth Airline conference in New York that Viva Aerobus's obvious service targets are in the border states of Texas and California. Initially, the carrier mostly likely will fly a handful of U.S. routes, Szucs said.

Low Cost Carriers getting bigger everyday : Gol is going to buy Brazil's national carrer, ex-Star Alliance Member Varig.

The brand Varig remains, but maybe in the future, when Varig's financial situation gets better, prices will go down. I don't think they will turn it onto a full LCC, but maybe they'll have punctually some unbeattable offers.
Wait and see...

I'm currently in Santiago, Chile. Having missed my flight to Buenos Aires tomorrow, I decided there wasn't enough time to visit Argentina now, and I'd get a flight straight to Rio to connect with my flight to Europe in 6 days time. So I've just tried booking with Gol. As mentioned above, their oneway price was ridiculous at around US$500 before tax, I didn{t bother going any further to find out what the tax was. So I tried a return, and got a price of around $50 each way before tax, or a total of around $160 for the return trip (even though I only need one leg of it). It's not too bad, infact, quite good if you're actually going to fly eachway.

So I decide to book it, after going through the whole process, filling in all my details, payment details, etc. I find out that only Brazilian Credit cards are accepted (the exception being American Express)! An international Airline which does not accept foreign Visa or Mastercard payments, crazy. Well, my advice, if you{re planning on flying with Gol, get yourself an Amex card first! Now, I thought about going to Santiago airport and trying to pay in cash (fairly sure this is possible, but not certain). But it was evening rush hour, it{s going to cost a fair amount of time and money, and I{m not 100% guaranteed to be able to even get a ticket. The flight also leaves at 07:50 am, meaning having to leave for the airport around 5am and also involves a change of flight in Sao Paolo.

After considering all this I decided to try the National Carrier LAN. A direct flight to Rio leaves at the far more reasonable time of 12:50 pm, and my card was accepted with no problems. The cost was $320 (oneway), around twice as much as Gol, it's not cheap, but so much simpler, and so much more convenient than flying with Gol. I'm actually glad that my Visa card wasn't accepted by Gol, as I now have a far more pleasant journey daytime.
