Pacific Airlines, the Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) based airline have now relaunched as a budget airline, with fares as low as $1 before extras. Current routes are: Domestic: HCMC - Hanoi HCMC - Danang International: HCMC - Taipei (Taiwan) HCMC - Kaohsiung (Taiwan) Future routes planned to start this year include: Domestic: Hue Nha Trang International: Bangkok (Thailand) Hong Kong (SAR China) Siem Reap (Cambodia) I managed to find Taipei-HCMC on Apr 08 for $14 after tax etc, flying the other way was a little more expensive, at $29 on Mar 27. Strangely there is a higher fuel surcharge flying out of HCMC, than when flying back. Is it possible that fuel is significantly more expensive in Vietnam than Taiwan? I also notice that on paper it works out a little cheaper in VND than USD, but would guess that this saving would get eaten up in conversion costs.

It looks like this offers the cheapest quickish route from SW China to Taiwan (ie to Hanoi by bus or train first)..

Hey, have you noticed that the name of the tax added to the fuel surcharge when departing Vietnam? it's "war insurance"!  That's a name that needs to be changed!

Onebir, I'm sure you're right, is there actually much demand from this part of China to the ROC, though?

MetalTraveller, Lol, yes, I noticed that, maybe something was lost in translation, but I have to say that the English language portion of their site is extremely easy to navigate and far better than what can be found on Chinese, Korean, or Japanese airline sites.

I'm actually quite excited about this new start up, I've been wanting to fly from BKK to HCMC for a while, this will be the first LCC to fly that route, and I'll be able to combine it with a trip to Taiwan too. The current options are to fly to Hanoi from BKK, then travel domestically to HCMC, or go via Singapore, and for Taiwan, the only option until now has been via Singapore. As much as I like Singapore, there's only so many times you can go to the same place before it gets a little boring.

Unfortunately ROC is the end of the line, it's ideally situated for an LCC to serve Hong Kong, Macau, South Korea, Japan, The Philippines, and even the Russian Far East, but I know of no plans to start one up there.

Not a huge amount, but I'm planning to spend a while there :P

It seems that Pacific don't have the aircraft to expand their network, so are negotiating deals with other regional airlines. Bangkok Airways will operate their BKK-HCMC route, it works out about THB4700, or US$140 one way! It's available to book on Pacific Airlines site now, for flights from May to July, but I don't see the point, as you can book the exact same flight for the same price directly with Bangkok Airways.

Even though it's expensive, I expect it's the cheapest way to fly this route, but it would probably work out cheaper to fly BKK-Hanoi with AirAsia, and then Hanoi-HCMC with Pacific Airlines. AirAsia have applied to the Vietnamese authorities to fly the BKK-HCMC route too.

They are planning a tie-up with Jetstar for the Singapore-HCMC route, I guess this will be equally pointless as you can already book this route directly with Jetstar, and Tiger Airways fly the same route for less.

Hopefully these are just stop-gap measures until they can acquire their own aircraft.
